The 3-day event, held in Austin, TX, was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, situated along the Colorado River. Of course, I went on a "bat cruise" at sunset to view the thousands of bats who fly out from the bridge spanning the River to feed on insects in the area. The concrete bridge, with narrow ridges of open space beneath it to allow the concrete to expand and contract, is home to the largest urban bat population in the United States. The bats consume approximately 40,000 pounds of insects per day, and that helps Austin farmers and parks keep their lands insect free without relying on harmful pesticides; thus the City allows the bat population to remain in the City.
